 Personal Reflection

One thing that went well during the process of creating my music video was the storyboarding stage. This is because when making my storyboard I put a lot of effort into the timings and fitting the shots together in time with the music timings. This resulted in efficient filming and knowing exactly what shots to capture while filming. Another thing that went well during the creation process was the thought that went into the intertextuality. My choice of intertextuality was the Ophelia painting by John Everett Millais. My choice to depict this image allowed the deeper messages of the storyline to be highlighted, and the shots fitted into the rest of the video. Finally, the lip-synching section of my music video was successful in both the filming and editing stages. While filming I made sure to capture multiple shots of the same lines being sung to ensure I had options to choose from later on. So, while some shots were unusable I was not caught out and didn’t have to fill in any gaps where lip-synching clips could not be used. When it got to the editing stage I was able to line up the lip-synching clips with the overlaid sound so they matched really well. Because of the thought that went into my storyboard, this also meant when editing I knew exactly at which point in the song I was placing certain clips.

The first area of improvement for the making of my music video was to take more care when filming. This is because in the final cut some shots in the video are not lined up, which creates an unfinished, almost messy result. To improve on this, I needed to make sure that I properly lined up my camera in the same place each time when filming, which would have allowed the shots to flow more smoothly together and the whole video to look more finalised. Another area that could have been improved was the thought that I put into mis-en-scene and colour schemes throughout the video. This is because when filming my lip-synching sections I didn’t use any makeup to make it look more professional. Also, the filming of the children running sections also did not have any specific outfit choices to tie it together with the rest of the video. I think I could have matched their outfits with the plain colour scheme in the rest of the video which would have contrasted with the background colours of the background. Possibly wearing black and white, or even more neutral tones would have allowed the shots with fit well with the more toned-down colours of both the Ophelia and the lip-synching moments.
